When we look closely at the Ten Commandments recorded in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21, we see that the first four define how to relate to God—how to show proper love and respect for our Maker. The other six define the essentials for right relationships with each other. God plainly tells us that all of His commandments are for our good. They have a purpose. They are to be a blessing and benefit to humankind. They define the relationships that produce respect, cooperation and stability within any society that fully understands and applies them.
1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image...You shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and your mother.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor's.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. This is the first and great commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Deuteronomy 6:5; Luke 10:27; Matthew 22:37-40; Mark 12:29-31)
